Two US Events from this Time Period

Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882

The Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 was a federal law that limited the number of Chinese iimmigrants allowed in America to one hundred and five a year. This act also limited the ability of Americans of Chinese descent to leave and return to America. This Act was passed because Americans were fearful of losing their jobs to Chinese Immigrants. The act was supposed to only last ten years but it was renewed and additional acts were passed. The act was not repealed until 1943.

The views that the Chinese Exclusion Act created were felt overseas in the imperialism of China. The act helped support the racist idea that Europeans and Americans are superior to Chinese. Which spurred on imperialism.

The Native American Wars

As America expanded into the western part of the contient conflicts with Native Americans became more common. The US army began fighting against the Native Americans in order to gain land for America. Two of the most famous incidents were the Wounded Knee Massacre and Custard's last stand. The Native Americans were overpowered by the US army's size and modern equipment. Eventually the Native Americans were given two choices by the US government, either they lived on reservations or they became part of the American Society.

The Native American Wars were just reflections of the imperialism going on in the other parts of the world. The Native Americans were treated just like the African chiefs, both were given faulty treaties that they did not understand. The Native American's like all other victims of imperialism were tricked into giving up their land.
